Cold Weather Garage Door Maintenance Tips
Before the extreme cold winter weather arrives is a good time to do regular seasonal maintenance on your garage door. Regular garage door maintenance will help to improve the life of your garage door. Just like anything with moving parts, parts break down over time. But if you conduct regular maintenance, you will get a longer life on any product.
Look and Listen – It is a good idea to take time to look and listen as you open and close your garage door. If needed take a flashlight and inspect an area closer.
Clean – Ring a rag in dish soap and water and remove any dirt and debris from your garage door, track and rollers. Dry if needed.
Check Weather Stripping – Wipe down and check for cracks on your garage door weather stripping. Replace any sections that need repair.
Lubricate Moving Parts– Use a few drops of standard lubricant oil to your garage door springs, bearings and hinges. Doing this every season will help expand the life of your garage door.
Examine the Cables – Use a flashlight to inspect the high-tension cables for signs of fraying. If you notice signs of wear and tear, it is a good time to contact your local garage door service company to come and repair.
Check Door Seals – With a flashlight, check door seals and replace any damaged or missing sections that you find.
Clean and Organize the Garage – Keeping your garage neat and tidy helps to keep debris out of the working parts of the garage door, and easier access when you need to find a tool to fix something. Move out the shovel, ice salt bucket, snow blower and other equipment that will be good to have ready when the snow flies.
